Mindfulness of Allah Surah 2:194
from Islam Awakened, 11/19/15
Wahiduddin Khan
:
A sacred month for a sacred month: violation of sanctity calls for fair retribution. Thus you may exact retribution from whoever transgresses against you, in proportion to his transgression. Fear God and know that God is with those who are mindful of Him.
Abdel Haleem:
A sacred month for a sacred month: violation of sanctity [calls for] fair retribution. So if anyone commits aggression against you, attack him as he attacked you, but be mindful of God, and know that He is with those who are mindful of Him.
My comments:
This ayah uses the word al mutaqeena, الْمُتَّقِينَ, which is translated by these two translators as those who are mindful of Allah. It is also translated in a variety of other ways, as those who fear Allah, those who restrain themselves (Yusuf Ali), those who are conscious of Allah (Muhammad Asad), and other translations as well.

Taqwa, most often translated as piety, is the standard of excellence for human beings, according to the Quran.
For an excellent free book see Taqwa-TheProvisionOfBelifvers By AbuMaryamMajdiFathiAl-sayed
The main point reiterated in the above book is to refrain from what Allah has forbidden and to do what Allah has commanded. So taqwa involves keeping one's duty, the Tawhid, five prayers, hajj, zakat, sawm, and then after that all the other qualities of a believer.
